Unlike many vintage handbag makers today, I actually create my own designs by hand. What I mean by that is I first have an idea. Then I draw that idea onto paper. After that comes the test run when I actually cut each individual part of the bag out and begin to sew. This is my test bag and not every test bag makes it to market. I sometimes have to go back to the drawing stage and perfect some things before I'm happy with a bag.
Many makers today do not have the artistic ability to create their own designs. This is why many bag patterns are available for purchase online and many "makers" buy these in order to make bags. These types of bags are not One Of A Kind where mine truly are. Every bag takes me hours to design and mock up before I make one for market. Even after all of this design work and test work, I still try to produce a bag that is affordable for most shoppers to be able to have a truly One Of A Kind piece of functional art.
Unfortunately, over the years some have "borrowed" my designs and used them to make clones of my bags. While this is disheartening, I try not to let it keep me awake at night.
